The Interfaith Coalition invites you on a journey with us . . . to explore how our member congregations, faith leaders, staff and volunteer leaders engage and address issues of justice affecting the people of Hartford and its surrounding communities: our tutoring and mentoring program in Hartford city schools, racial and ethnic inequalities in health care in the State of Connecticut, and urban violence as a public health issue in the City of Hartford. These and other concerns are at the heart of the Coalition. We are pleased to share our programs and work with you and invite you to join us in these important efforts!
GHICEJ Sets New Course
“Let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!”
--Amos 5:24
From the desk of Josh Pawelek, GHICEJ President
Friends, we know this: Too many people in the Greater Hartford region are
suffering from ongoing systemic injustices in health care, education, taxation,
immigration, housing, employment and on and on. Because we know this, GHICEJ is
committed to continuing its historic work of “organizing people of faith acting
for a just community.” To that end, GHICEJ has set a new course.
The Greater Hartford interfaith Coalition for Equity and Justice (GHICEJ) has
committed itself to a new vision. GHICEJ will convene churches, synagogues,
mosques and other religious bodies to transform unjust conditions that exist in
the greater Hartford region. In the near-term, GHICEJ will focus its resources
and energy on organizing its current members into a social justice
power-organization. In the long-term, GHICEJ, in partnership with its allies,
will organize its members to conduct direct actions and legislative advocacy to
create a more just and equitable society.
In order to pursue this vision, the GHICEJ board and staff will reach out to
current GHICEJ members in four ways:
1) One- on-one meetings with congregational leaders;
2) A mid-fall gathering of GHICEJ’s clergy leaders;
3) Regional cluster gatherings;
4) On-line survey
The purpose of these meetings will be to:
1) further clarify GHICEJ’s new vision;
2) determine which current GHICEJ members are committed to the new
vision;
3) determine resources in leadership, finances and other critical
components for GHICEJ’s reorganization;
4) determine next steps in organizing GHICEJ into a power
organization capable of transforming unjust conditions in the greater Hartford region.
